The calculator below converts any weight (grams, tola, or troy ounce) into a current AED value at your chosen karat, useful for Dubai Gold Souk jewellery purchases, zakat nisab calculation, or comparing pawn-shop offers.
Gold karats explained: UAE hallmarks
UAE jewellery uses both the karat system (American/European) and the parts-per-thousand hallmark (Indian/South Asian / Swiss). Both refer to the same purity:
| Karat | Hallmark | % Gold | Typical use in UAE |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 999 | 99.9% | Investment bars, coins, bullion |
| 22K | 916 | 91.6% | Wedding sets, Indian/Pakistani jewellery |
| 21K | 875 | 87.5% | Common Arabic/Egyptian jewellery |
| 18K | 750 | 75.0% | European-style, designer pieces, watches |
So "916 gold" = 22K, "750 gold" = 18K. Use the live rates above to convert any weight to AED.
How to calculate the price of any weight of gold
For any weight, the calculation is straightforward:
Total price (AED) = weight in grams × per-gram rate for your karat
Worked examples (use the live rate from the "Gold Rates Today" widget above):
- 1 gram of 24K gold = 1 × (24K AED/g)
- 10 grams of 22K gold = 10 × (22K AED/g), common Indian wedding set
- 1 tola of 22K gold = 11.664 × (22K AED/g), South Asian standard unit
- 1 troy ounce of 24K gold = 31.1035 × (24K AED/g), international bullion unit
- 50 grams of 21K gold = 50 × (21K AED/g)
Jewellery shops typically add a making charge (5 to 20% of the gold value) on top, plus 5% VAT on the making charge only (the gold itself is VAT-exempt under FTA Cabinet Decision 25/2018 for 99%+ purity investment gold).

Why Buy Gold in Dubai?
Dubai is one of the world's largest gold trading hubs. The city's Gold Souk in Deira and numerous malls offer competitive prices due to low import duties and no VAT on investment-grade gold (bars, coins of 99% purity or higher). Making charges for jewelry vary by shop and design.
Understanding Karat Purity
- 24K (999): Pure gold, 99.9% purity. Softest form, mainly for investment bars and coins.
- 22K (916): 91.6% pure. Popular for traditional jewelry in South Asia and the Gulf. Good balance of purity and durability.
- 21K (875): 87.5% pure. Widely preferred in the Middle East for everyday gold jewelry.
- 18K (750): 75% pure. More durable, used for designer and Western-style jewelry. Often mixed with white metals for rose or white gold.
How Gold Prices Are Determined
Gold prices in the UAE follow the international spot price (set in London and traded globally in USD per troy ounce). The UAE Dirham is pegged to USD at 3.6725, so AED gold prices move in lockstep with the global market. Retail prices include a small premium and making charges for jewelry.
Tips for Gold Buyers in Dubai
- Always check the daily gold rate before visiting the Gold Souk.
- Negotiate making charges, not the gold price itself (gold rate is fixed).
- Ask for a detailed receipt showing weight, karat, making charges, and total price.
- Buy from shops displaying the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG) logo for assured quality.
- Investment gold (bars/coins above 99% purity) is VAT-exempt in the UAE.
