UAE Stock Markets: A Beginner's Guide

DFM vs. ADX: What's the Difference?

The UAE has two main stock exchanges: the Dubai Financial Market (DFM) and the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX). DFM typically lists companies based in Dubai (like Emaar, Emirates NBD), while ADX lists Abu Dhabi-based giants (like FAB, Etisalat). Both markets operate under the regulations of the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA).

Trading Hours

Both DFM and ADX operate from Monday to Friday. The standard trading session opens with a pre-opening auction at 09:30 AM, followed by continuous trading from 10:00 AM to 03:00 PM. Markets are closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.

How to Start Trading

  • Obtain a National Investor Number (NIN): This is a unique ID required for all investors. You can apply through the DFM or ADX apps or authorized brokerage firms.
  • Open a Trading Account: Choose a licensed brokerage firm in the UAE.
  • Fund Your Account: Transfer money to your brokerage account.
  • Start Trading: Buy and sell shares through your broker's platform.

Key Market Indices

The DFM General Index (DFMGI) tracks the performance of the Dubai market, while the FTSE ADX General Index (FADX 15) tracks the top 15 companies on the Abu Dhabi exchange. These indices are key indicators of the UAE's overall economic health.
